The 27-year-old soul musician started writing music in 2002 when she was still in high school. She moved to Pretoria in 2004 where she met Hakeem, a popular MC on the Pretoria circuit, who introduced her to the Pretoria hip-hop scene. While studying at Tshwane University of Technology, she quietly developed her skills and sound, which she describes as semi-jazzy soul blues. “I grew up listening to a lot of RnB records, although recently I’ve really just enjoyed the sounds of jazz, soul, blues, rap, gospel, but music is music so I can’t be limiting myself. Nombongo has opened up for Asanda Bam at her launch, at Cafe 52 in Pretoria. She was also honoured to get an invite to perform at Black Coffee’s record 60 hour set gig. She takes influence from the likes of Busi Mhlongo, Nina Simone, Sade and Thandiswa ect. She also worked with Outrageous Records in 2008 as a developing artist and says that her interactions at the latter have impacted positively on her music career. “Being at Outrageous Records has opened up channels that have allowed me to learn more about music.
