FRATPACKFor a few years, Kitso Moremi and Kabelo Mr Calibre Moremi were South African hip hops best kept secret. But now, the two-man musical army known to their legion of supporters as fratpack can no longer be kept on the hush. Thanks to their trend-setting music video for Dream airing on music television channels all across the continent, 2011 was the year fratpack made an indelible mark on the music map. This year, fratpack will release their highly anticipated EP, Famlove. fratpack does not believe in calling supporters of their alternative brand of hip hop by the word, fans. Instead, they use the more affectionate, apt title of fam. With this in mind and inspired by the outpouring of love the group received for their debut offering, The Far Out Mixtape (2008) and their follow-up, Not In The Mixtape (2010), they have decided to name their next musical endeavour, Famlove. With little radio airplay and a string of performances, fratpack used the mixtape format to introduce their music to the masses. The Far Out Mixtape has become a collectors item since all copies were sold out. Not In The Mixtape, which is widely supported by regional and community radio includes fan favourites like Infinite Love, Scribble Paper and Everything I’m Not. fratpack fuse hip hop, alternative rock and electronic sounds to make progressive and sonically appealing music with a message. This sound is designed by me who is the producer and rapper in the group while rapper, Mr Calibre brings a fresh approach to Mzansi’s hip hop landscape. When not in the booth, me is an award-winning sound engineer in the Advertising Industry while Mr Calibre juggles his time between completing a law degree through Wits University and presenting YO TV’s flagship hip hop programme, Battle Stations. Keep up with fratpack.
